Chiefs place Trent McDuffie on IR, plus additional roster moves

To go along with the addition of kicker Matt Ammendola to the practice squad, the Kansas City Chiefs have made some additional roster moves on Tuesday.

As announced on the team’s official Twitter page, the Chiefs have released safety James Wiggins from the practice and activated linebackers Jack Cochrane and Elijah Lee to the active roster. Kansas City also signed cornerback Dicaprio Bootle and wide receiver Corey Coleman to the practice squad. The team released both players during final cuts following the preseason in late August.

Finally, the most notable transaction was moving rookie and first-round draft pick Trent McDuffie to the Reserved/Injured list. McDuffie suffered a strained hamstring last Sunday in Arizona, causing him to leave the game early. On Tuesday, head coach Andy Reid said the injury to McDuffie was caused by some loose sod that the Cardinals use at State Farm Stadium.

“It was a little loose,” said Reid. “That’s what happens sometimes when you re-sod. It’s part of the Butker injury and the McDuffie injury, and that’s unfortunate. The turf picked up, and I would tell you that it did have something to do with it. If it didn’t, I’d tell you that, too. It’s not an excuse by any means. But you all see it when you watch the tape, he explained.”

McDuffie played 21 defensive snaps before getting injured and lived up to the preseason hype as a first-round pick. The former Washington alum brought airtight coverage the entire time he was on the field and was not targeted once in Week 1.

McDuffie will miss at least the next four games, including the Chiefs’ Week 2 home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. He’ll also be unavailable when Kansas City plays the Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Las Vegas Raiders. The soonest he can return to the team from IR will be Week 6 when Kansas City battles Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.
