Chiefs place safety Tyrann Mathieu on reserve/COVID-19 list

Stunning news to come out of Kansas City Chiefs headquarters as the team is preparing its roster for the upcoming season as star safety Tyrann Mathieu was placed on the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday afternoon. NFL Network was the first to report Mathieu failed his recent COVID test.

According to ESPN’s Adam Teicher, a source close to the situation has told ESPN that Mathieu is vaccinated.

The Chiefs now only have three safeties on the active roster following final cuts on Tuesday evening.

In order to return to the team in time for the season opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 12, Mathieu will need to pass two COVID tests within a 24-hour period and be asymptomatic.

While Mathieu is away from the team, the Chiefs have reportedly re-signed wide receiver Marcus Kemp, who they released yesterday, to take his spot on the active roster.

Mathieu is in the final year of the three-year deal that he signed with Kansas City back in 2019. In 2020, he registered 62 total tackles and six interceptions that returned for 70 yards and one pick-six.
