Chiefs owner Clark Hunt says all stadium options are open

2024 has been a crazy offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs organization. While the players are preparing for a new season, and the coaches and front office are working to evaluate the talent of the 90-man roster, Chairman & CEO Clark Hunt and team president Mark Donovan is working to find a way to move the process toward a new stadium.

After the team’s Day 2 practice at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph on Monday, Hunt spoke to the media about where the organization’s thoughts are as they continue to pursue the best course of action toward to new stadium.

Hunt essentially explains all options are on the table – even moving into a brand-new stadium in Kansas – but started by clarifying that he prefers to renovate GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

“GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is a special place,” said Hunt. “It’s special for our fans. It’s special for the players and coaches. But we do have to look to the future [and] we do need to find a solution starting in 2031 — which I know that Mark mentioned.”

The Chiefs tried to pass a future $500 million project that would’ve given Arrowhead a facelift in the failed April 1 election. Since then, the Kansas legislator passed a STAR bond bill to lure the Chiefs over to KCK with the promise of a fully funded brand-new stadium with tax-payer dollars.

“We’re glad to have some options,” Hunt stated. “We really appreciate what the Kansas legislature did in passing the upgrade to the STAR bond bill that would potentially give us an opportunity to look at a stadium over there.

“We’re going to work very hard over the coming months and years to come up with a solution that makes sense for the team but also makes sense for the community. So we’re approaching it very much with an open mind — and look forward to talking to leaders on both sides of the state line.”

The Chiefs still have more than six years left on their current lease with the Truman Sports Complex. So there’s plenty of time between now and then to work something out. However, a potential move to Kansas is still very real until the leaders of Missouri respond with some reassurance the state has not intention of letting the Chiefs leave Arrowhead or KCMO.
