Chiefs lose two to injury following loss to Saints

Following their recent exhibition game in the Big Easy, a 26-24 road loss to the Saints on Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs returned to their training camp facility in St. Joseph, Missouri, empty-handed thanks to Chris Oladokun’s ill-timed interception that ultimately let the game slip away at the very end.

The Chiefs coaching staff will use Sunday’s loss to help evaluate who stays and who goes later this month during final cuts. Kansas City was without a few key players before their first preseason matchup and saw two more exit during the game.

“Nic Jones fractured a couple of fingers; we will see how he does,” said head coach Andy Reid shortly after the game. “[Anthony] Witherstone hurt his big toe. We have to see how that also does when we get back.”

Kansas City will likely have further updates throughout the week. Still, the injury to Nic Jones is disappointing, considering the training camp he was having. However, Reid didn’t necessarily indicate that he would miss an extended amount of time.

Witherstone, on the other hand, faced an uphill battle to make the Chiefs’ final 53-man roster. He could hit the waiver wire or secure an injury settlement in the next few days.

Other injuries the Chiefs will continue to monitor include tight end Jody Fortson (dislocated shoulder suffered on July 28), running back Isiah Pacheco (hand/labrum), wide receiver Kadarius Toney (partially torn meniscus suffered on July 23), cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (knee inflammation), and Tershawn Wharton, who’s getting eased back into the lineup after entering training camp on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list due to having surgery to repair a torn ACL that ended for 2022 campaign.
