Chiefs HC Andy Reid is optimistic that Charles Omenihu will play vs. Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs get an extra boost to their pass rush as defensive end Charles Omenihu returns to the team after serving a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. The former Texas standout took to X the share his excitement about being back and it looks like he won’t have to wait long to step onto the field.

Head Coach Andy Reid took to the podium on Monday and told reporters the soonest Omenihu could make his Chiefs debut would be this Sunday when Kansas City hosts the Los Angeles Chargers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

“I think there’s a good chance of that,” said Reid regarding Omenihu playing this weekend. “He’s been back here [and] is in good shape, it’s just a matter of getting him back in there. He went through all of camp and worked his tail off. Like I said, he’s kept himself in good shape [while] he was gone here. [Now it’s] just a matter of getting [him] back and in the swing of things again.”

Omenihu spent last season with the San Francisco 49ers, where he appeared in all 17 regular season games and received 53% of the defensive snaps – registering 20 tackles, 16 QB hits, 21 pressures, and 4.5 sacks.

As a team, the Chiefs currently rank 12th in the NFL with 17 total sacks. Kansas City’s dominant play on defense has been a pleasant surprise for them through the first six weeks of the season. Adding Omenihu to an already stout unit provides an extra level of depth and more ways for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to dial up blitz packages with another pass rusher in his arsenal.
