Chiefs defeat Broncos, 23-3, for season sweep

On a snowy day at Arrowhead Stadium, the Kansas City Chiefs hammered Drew Lock and the Denver Broncos for the series sweep of the 2019 season. In two games, the Chiefs have outscored the Broncos 53-9 this year and have defeated Denver in ninth straight games since Week 2 of the 2015 season.

There was a lot of hype surrounding rookie quarterback Drew Lock, who put up some big numbers last week against the Houston Texans but Kansas City’s defense proved to be too much for the young QB to handle as Lock completed less than 50 percent of his passes for 208 yards and a pick.

Spagnuolo’s defense did an excellent job getting after the young passer, forcing his to make erratic throws, many of which came close to being picked off, and registering two sacks from defensive end Alex Okafor and safety Tyrann Mathieu.

Offensively, quarterback Patrick Mahomes was perfect as always and showed that even in the snow, that he and receiver Tyreek Hill are a lethal combination on the field. Both of Mahomes’ touchdown passes went Hill’s way as the league’s best quarterback threw 27-of-34 for 340 yards.

Meanwhile, Tyreek Hill proved that cheetahs can run in the snow as he ran perfect routes that allowed him to register five catches for 67 yards.

Tight end Travis Kelce made history today after making 11 receptions for 142 yards to become the first tight end ever to record four straight thousand-yard seasons. Kelce also registered the most receiving yards for a tight end in his first seven seasons of his career.

Kansas City has seen a number of great tight ends come through the organization over the years from Fred Arbanas to Keith Cash, to the great Tony Gonzalez but Travis Kelce is quickly becoming the greatest tight end not just in Chiefs franchise history but also in the NFL.

Kicker Harrison Butker also made a little bit of history, becoming the NFL’s all-time player to score the most points in the first three seasons of an NFL career. Butker has been clutch for Kansas City and special teams coach Dave Toub and has not missed a kick since the game against the Titans back in November. Butker has made over 87 percent of kicks this year and has made 17 of his last 18, his lone miss coming against Tennessee.

Kansas City has just two games left before the start of the postseason and next week might be the Chiefs’ best chance to snag a first-round bye. While they’ll need to win their last two games of the season, Kansas City needs New England to drop just one game in order to grab the two seed.

New England plays Buffalo next Sunday which will be the last opponent the Patriots play this season that has a winning record.

For Kansas City, the Chiefs travel to Chicago for the first time since 2011 to play Mitch Trubisky and a Bears team desperate for a victory. Head Coach Andy Reid will take on one of his former assistants in Bears Head Coach Matt Nagy, who was with the Chiefs under Reid as the QBs coach from 2013 – 2015 and as the offensive coordinator from 2016 – 2017.

Following today’s victory over the Broncos, the Chiefs improve to 10-4 on the season while Denver fall’s to 5-9. The end of the 2019 season will be the first time since the early 70’s that Denver will have three straight losing seasons.
