Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo talks about defending against Steelers QB Russell Wilson

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off their most complete game of the season, following a 27-19 victory over the Houston Texans on Saturday afternoon. Kansas City will be on another short week with a road contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers kicking off on Wednesday as part of the NFL’s Christmas Day slate.

One of the challenges for Kansas City will be defending against the Steelers’ offense and quarterback Russell Wilson. On Sunday, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke with the media via ZOOM call to discuss what makes Wilson such a dangerous signal-caller.

“Listen, first of all, [Steelers QB Russell Wilson]. We know what he’s been all about making big plays,” Spagnuolo explained. “He loves to chuck the ball deep. He’s got guys and he’s got a lot of confidence in them to go up and get it. We have to be on point back there,”

The Steelers have one of the most dangerous playmakers in the league in wide receiver George Pickens, who’s caught 55 balls for 850 yards and three touchdowns this year. Spagnuolo warns Kansas City’s secondary will need to be at the top of their game.

“We’ve been playing the ball pretty well on the back end in the last couple of games,” Spagnuolo recalled. “That needs to continue in this game. When we get these 50/50 jump balls against the Pittsburgh Steelers, we have to try to win more than we lose there. That’ll make a big difference in the game.”

Watch for the Chiefs to be creative when defending against the Steelers’ passing attack.
