Chiefs cut DAT, activate Shurmur to the active roster

The inevitable is now a reality as the Kansas City Chiefs release return man De’Anthony Thomas and activate rookie quarterback Kyle Shurmur to the active roster. Kansas City also added defensive tackle Braxton Hoyett to the practice.

These moves aren’t exactly ‘news’, there were reports throughout the weekend that these moves were going to happen. They’re just official as of today.

The move to activate Shurmur was a move most saw coming since Matt Moore was the only healthy quarterback on the roster when Pat Mahomes went down to injury and obviously Reid would prefer not to rely on fullback Anthony Sherman, who is listed as the team’s emergency quarterback.

As for DAT, the Chiefs have Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman to return kicks and felt Thomas is worth letting go since he really hasn’t made the most out of his opportunities on special teams.

Kansas City’s newest addition to the practice squad is defensive tackle Braxton Hoyett, who originally entered the NFL with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State in 2019. Hoyett signed with the Chiefs back on September 30 after he was released by the Titans a month prior.
