Chiefs create cap space by restructuring Joe Thuney’s contract

Now that Chris Jones is officially back on the Kansas City Chiefs active roster, the team’s front office had to make a corresponding move to create some wiggle room in the salary cap. Jones’ new contract that he agreed to on Monday allows him to make as much as $25 million this season, thus, the reason for the cap adjustment.

According to NFL insider Field Yates, the Chiefs created $8.7 million in cap space by restructuring offensive guard Joe Thuney’s contract. Thuney now has a $27 million cap hit for the next two seasons, per Over the Cap, solidifying the 31-year-old’s future in KC.

Thuney joined the Chiefs as a free agent in 2020 to the tune of a five-year, $80 million contract. The move is a win-win for the Chiefs because they get their star defensive tackle back in the building and see their starting left guard serve out the remainder of his current deal.

Thuney first entered the league with the New England Patriots as a third-round draft pick. Thuney instantly became a Super Bowl champ in his five seasons with the Pats as New England appeared in three consecutive Super Bowls, winning two. In 2020, he played the entire season under the franchise tag.

The following spring, he entered the open market and signed with Kansas City, where he continues to compete for championships while blocking for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
