Chiefs cornerback Rashad Fenton undergoing shoulder correction

On Tuesday, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach spoke to the media to recap the draft and the days that followed. Veach loaded up at the secondary over the last few days, landing five defensive backs in the draft last weekend and acquiring former Houston Texans cornerback Lonnie John Jr. on Monday. All six will compete for a roster spot over the summer.

In regard to returning veterans, Rashad Fenton, who will be entering his fourth NFL season in 2022, is someone who’ll be looking to move up the depth chart and into a starting role next season. But before he’ll be ready to start for the Chiefs potentially, Veach mentioned the 25-year-old is currently undergoing some rehab this off-season.

“Fenton’s a guy that we’re high on, and we’re very confident in,” said Veach. “He’s going through a little bit of a rehab now, so hopefully, we get him for the start of training camp.”

Chiefs CB Rashad Fenton to miss practice Wednesday

A year ago, Fenton had a breakout regular season, recording a career-high 49 tackles (39 solo). However, he dealt with a back injury which kept him from participating in the Kansas City’s Wildcard and Divisional round games during the postseason.

That said, Veach told reporters that Fenton is rehabbing his shoulder.

“I’m sure (vice president of sports medicine and performance) Rick [Burkholder] will talk about that either after OTAs or before,” said Veach. “It’s something that I think he’ll be ready for training camp. We certainly want to get some guys out here and be ready to roll and be in a position to kind of know what we have.”

According to Pro Football Focus, Fenton’s 86.3 career pass coverage grade ranks fourth in the National Football League since 2019, trailing only Jaire Alexander, Jalen Ramsey, and Jamel Dean.

Kansas City’s OTA (organized team activity) workouts begin on May 25.
