Chiefs CEO provides update in Mahomes contract talks

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes never seems to escape the headlines centered around One Arrowhead Drive these days and Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt may have added more fuel to the fire regarding the 24-year-old’s financial future with the team.

According to NFL.com’s Jelani Scott, Hunt revealed an update on Mahomes’ contract negotiations while participating in a Facebook Live event with the Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan on Thursday evening.

As Mahomes enters the fourth season of his rookie deal, the team picked out his fifth-year option in late April to allow more time to eventually work something out before he officially becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2022. However, the club has made it abundantly clear they plan to do everything possible to prevent that from happening, and as Hunt indicates, contract talks could be heating up in a few months.

“The negotiations are something we’ll be getting into this summer,” Hunt said. “But what he has said and what we’ve said, both sides are that he wants to be a Kansas City Chief for life, and that’s our mentality as well,” Hunt explained. “We want him to play his entire career in Kansas City, and that’s what we’re going to be shooting for.”

In just two seasons as a starter, Mahomes has achieved an amount of success that some QBs could only dream of. Being named MVP of Super Bowl 54 after winning the league MVP award the previous season.

There’s no doubt that securing the NFL’s best young passer of this generation should be the franchise’s top priority. All we can do now is await the details of his new deal which will likely set the tone for future contracts and change the way we view signal-callers moving forward.
