Chiefs bring back QB Chad Henne on a one-year deal

Kansas City Chiefs backup quarterback Chad Henne will be back with the team in 2022. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the career-backup signed another one-year contract to remain in Kansas City on Wednesday afternoon.

This upcoming season will be Henne’s fourth season with the Chiefs, which he’ll be backing up Patrick Mahomes, and it’ll also be the 36-year-old’s thirteenth season in the NFL. Head Coach Andy Reid typically prefers to have an experienced veteran plugged in as his second-string QB, a trend that goes back to the days when Reid was the head man in Philadelphia, and that’ll continue to be the case for the 2022 campaign.

In three seasons with the Chiefs thus far, Henne has proven to be a reliable play-caller for the rare situations where Patrick Mahomes is unavailable to run the offense. Since signing with the Chiefs in 2018, Henne has appeared in eight games and connected on 41 of 57 passes for 369 yards and two touchdowns.

Henne’s greatest moment as a Chief occurred in the postseason two years ago against the Cleveland Browns. Henne completed a dart to Tyreek Hill to convert a fourth-and-one which sealed a 22-17 victory in the Divisional round.

There were question marks around the Chiefs possibly moving on from Henne and letting second-year QB Shane Buechele take the reins as Mahomes’ backup. Those questions have since been answered now that Henne will be returning a new $2 million deal.
