Chiefs announce contract extensions to Andy Reid and Brett Veach

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced on Monday afternoon that Head Coach Andy Reid and General Manager Brett Veach have each agreed to contract extensions with the club. While both Reid and Veach are in their eighth season with the Chiefs, Veach is in his fourth season as the team’s GM.

Reid was hired as the thirteenth head coach in Chiefs franchise history on January 7, 2013, and since then, has led the Chiefs to an 85-36 regular-season record, six postseason appearances, back-to-back AFC Championship Game appearances, and a Super Bowl title.

Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt spoke on the decision to extend Big Red’s contract.

“Over the last eight seasons here in Kansas City we’ve had the opportunity to witness one of the greatest head coaches of all-time lead our franchise to its first Super Bowl title in 50 years,” Hunt said. “He’s a hall of fame head coach, but more importantly, an outstanding person who has really changed our team culture. I’d like to congratulate Andy and his family on this well-deserved extension. It is our hope that he can finish his legendary career right here in Kansas City.”

As I previously mentioned in my last article, Reid has quickly surrounded himself, has one of the best head coaches in Chiefs history, and has built a strong case to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday. In 22 seasons as an NFL head coach, Reid is 215-129-1 in regular-season play and has 230 total victories, which is the second-most victories by an active head coach and the fifth-most in NFL history.

In a statement, Reid expressed his excitement and appreciation to be locked in as the team’s head coach for the foreseeable future.

“I’d like to thank Clark and the entire Hunt family for their support over the last eight years,” Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid said. “Aside from winning the Super Bowl, one of my favorite moments last season was being able to be a part of bringing the Lamar Hunt Trophy back to the family. I’m grateful for our players, my coaching staff, our support staff, and our great fans. My family and I love living in Kansas City, and I look forward to continuing my career here.”

Before coming to Kansas City, Reid spent 14 seasons as the Head Coach and Executive Vice President of Football Operations with the Philadelphia Eagles. There, he compiled a 130-93-1 regular-season record with 6 division championships, five NFC Championship appearances, and a Super Bowl appearance. In total, Reid’s teams have made the postseason 15 times with a 15-14 record.

Moving onto General Manager Brett Veach, who also received a contract extension for the fine job he’s done since earning the role in 2017.  In this past offseason alone, Veach signed QB Patrick Mahomes, TE Travis Kelce, and DT Chris Jones to hefty contract extensions that will keep three core players in Kansas City for the foreseeable future. Veach is also responsible for successfully retooling the defense and acquiring key roster additions such as DE Frank Clark and S Tyrann Mathieu.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt also congratulated Veach for the excellent job he did to bring a championship team back to Kansas City.

“Brett has had a remarkable run as our General Manager over the past four years, and he certainly deserves this recognition,” Hunt said. “His creativity, along with a personal connection to our players and staff, has helped build a championship roster. He has had an impressive start to his career as a GM, and I know he’ll continue his aggressive approach that has consistently improved the talent of the Chiefs.”

In 2019, Veach became the second-youngest GM (42 years old) to win a Super Bowl following Kansas City’s 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. Veach expressed his appreciation to remain the Chiefs GM and look forward to keeping the winning tradition in Kansas City going.

“I’d like to thank Clark and the entire Hunt family for putting the trust and confidence in me to run our personnel department,” Veach said. “I’m blessed to be surrounded by talented people, including a tremendous staff and a hall of fame head coach. I’m excited and looking forward to continue building upon the foundation we’ve established as a team.”

Before becoming the GM of the Chiefs, Veach has spent his entire career working under Andy Reid, starting as a coaching intern with the Eagles in 2004. In 2008, he earned a position as a coaching assistant and later became a scout for the Eagles in 2010.

In 2013 Veach followed Reid to Kansas City and started as the Pro and College Personnel Analyst and worked his way up to assume the Co-Director of Player Personnel role in 2015. Two seasons later, Veach replaced John Dorsey as the team’s General Manager.

So far, there’s been no word on how long Andy Reid and Brett Veach have been extensions, just that the Chiefs will have a stable foundation for the years to come. We truly are in the greatest era of Chiefs football.
