Chiefs announce roster moves following rookie minicamp

The Kansas City Chiefs announced some moves to the roster after wrapping up its rookie minicamp on Monday. The team signed wide receiver Daurice Fountain and cornerback Manny Patterson, who both attended camp as tryouts.

To fit both players onto the 90-man roster, the Chiefs reportedly released wide receiver Tajae Sharpe and defensive back Jaylon McClain-Sapp. Sharpe originally broke into the league as a member of the Tennessee Titans in 2016 and played there for three seasons before getting signed to Kansas City’s practice squad last December. Meanwhile, McClain-Sapp has yet to make an imprint on the playing field. The former defensive back out of Marshall was recently picked up by Kansas City as an undrafted rookie free agent but will now be waiting for another team to scoop him up.

As for the new kids on the block, WR Daurice Fountain, 25, first entered the league in 2018 with the Indianapolis Colts but bounced on and off the practice squad, appearing in just six games in three years with two catches for 23 yards. At 6-feet-1-inch and 210-pounds, the product out of Northern Iowa torn up his pro day back in 2018, which includes a 4.46 forty time.

Although Foutain has yet to make his mark in the NFL, he’s the kind of talent that has the potential to stand out from a very talent-heavy wide receivers room in Kansas City.

Cornerback Manny Patterson was also signed with the Chiefs after trying out for the team’s roster. The former Maine prospect played for the Black Bears from 2016 through 2019, starting a total of 39 games before suffering an ACL injury to shortened his senior campaign. Before getting injured, Patterson, who’ll turn 23 at the end of May, was a three-time All-CAA selection that registered 93 career tackles (67 solo), 47 pass breakups, and an interception. As a freshman, Patterson started nine games for the Bears and was Maine’s defensive rookie of the year following the 2016 campaign.

Patterson went undrafted in 2020 and began his NFL journey with the Washington Football Team’s practice squad. Following his release, the 5-feet-10, 180-pound cornerback finished out the 2020 season on the Huston Texans practice squad.
