Chiefs announce practice squad plus roster moves

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the following list of players added to their practice squad:

WR –  Jody Fortson

Fortson impressed during training camp and looked good against the Green Bay Packers last Thursday catching 2 of 3 targets for 38 yards and a touchdown.

TE – Nick Keizer

Keizer played hard this past preseason and training camp and some thought he might end up on the active roster but don’t count that possibility out just yet; especially if either Blake Bell or Deon Yelder fail to pan out. Keizer finished the preseason with 8 receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown.

RB – Marcus Marshall

Most of Marshall’s touches came in the last exhibition game of the year where he carried the ball 14 times for 59 yards. He also made 4 catches for 17 yards.

C – Jimmy Murray

Murray will provide emergency depth at center and within the interior of the o-line, can’t go wrong there.

QB – Kyle Shurmur

There was talk the undrafted rookie passer from Vanderbilt had the edge over Chase Litton and those talks were correct.

Against the Packers, Shurmur finished the first half throwing 14 of 20 for 143 yards, one touchdown, and a pick. Compared to Litton, the two young QBs put up very similar stats shown below.

Kyle Shurmur: 33/56, 316 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT

Chase Litton: 32/55, 276 yds, 3 TD, 2 INT

Despite Litton having the stronger arm, Shurmur showed he was able to make better reads and have a better pocket presence with the ability to get the ball out quicker.

WR – Cody Thompson –

Cody Thompson was a surprising name to find on the list of final cuts yesterday and it’s a bit of a relief that the Chiefs were able to get him back. He looked very good in preseason play this year leading the team in receptions with 12 catches for 108 yards.

Other Roster Moves

The Chiefs announced linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu from Georgia Tech has been released and have brought back guard Jeff Allen after releasing him yesterday. This won’t be the only move Brett Veach makes over the next few weeks since he still has to make room for newly signed running back LeSean McCoy as well as wide receiver DeAnthony Thomas and cornerback Morris Claiborne when they come back from serving each of their suspensions.

Finally, as expected, quarterback Chad Henne has been placed on injured reserve with a broken ankle. The Chiefs will go into the 2019 season with Patrick Mahomes and Matt Moore as his lone backup.
