Chiefs add DB Adrian Colbert and WR Marcus Kemp

Following the league’s recent disciplinary action to cornerback Bashaud Breeland, the Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly added two players to their training camp roster on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Yahoo! Sports reporter Terez Paylor, the Chiefs will sign former Miami Dolphins Safety Adrian Colbert as soon as he completes his mandatory COVID-19 screening.

Colbert, 26, was a seventh-round selection by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 and was picked up off the waiver wire by Miami during the 2019 season. Colbert played six games, starting five for the Dolphins, playing 361 defensive snaps.

The Dolphins had initially re-signed Colbert as a restricted free agent but was released by the team earlier this week.

Following the suspension of Bashaud Breeland, Colbert will provide the versatility and veteran depth that Kansas City needs in its secondary right now. He has experience playing at free safety but also played cornerback in college at Miami (FL) and comes with a reputation for being a physical hitter with a 4.4 speed. At 6-foot-2-inches, Colbert is a long, versatile, player that should fit right into Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive scheme.

Kansas City also welcomed back a familiar face, according to Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest, by re-signing wide receiver Marcus Kemp.

The Chiefs originally chose not to offer Kemp a restricted free agent tender after spending the entire 2019 campaign on injured reserve with a torn ACL he suffered during the preseason.

It was unfortunate for Kemp because before his injury, he was seen as a player on the verge of transitioning from a special teams contributor to a legitimate member of the Chiefs offense.

Adding Kemp back to the fold gives Kansas City a player who’s already familiar to Andy Reid’s playbook while also providing more depth and competition at wide receiver.

“Having him back is great,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told the media via Zoom on Wednesday. “He’s a great kid. I’m so glad that he’s back now because he was playing the best football he had ever played since we’d had him here when he got hurt. It was a shame that that happened, and now he’s getting a chance to come back and it looks like he’s worked his tail off. We worked him out [Tuesday]. He did a great job with it.

“He needs to get himself into football shape as he goes, but he took some reps [Wednesday], and did a nice job with it so we’ll just see how it goes,” Reid explained.

Kansas City’s home opener against the Houston Texans is just three weeks away and as the team’s roster begins to take shape, the Chiefs hope their new additions will help make an impact to defend their Super Bowl title.
