Chiefs activate DT Khalen Saunders off IR, waive Josh Gordon

Under 24 hours since the thrilling victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional round the night before, the Kansas City Chiefs are back in business mode, making two personnel moves to the roster.

NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported earlier this afternoon via Twitter that the team has activated defensive tackle Khalen Saunders off the Reserved/Injured list to the active roster. Saunders had been on the injury list since November 30 with a knee injury but was recently designated to practice on January 4, offering a three-week window to either return to the active roster or spend the rest of the season on Reserve/Injured.

He also spent the early portion of the 2020 season on IR, which resulted in Tershawn Wharton working his way up the depth chart. Saunders went inactive for the entire 2020 campaign.

To make room for Saunders on the 53-man roster, Kansas City waived veteran wide receiver Josh Gordon, who was signed by the team after his league suspension was lifted in early September. Gordon played in 12 games for the Chiefs, starting seven but never appeared to click in Reid’s offense. He was targeted 14 times and only caught five passes for 32 yards a touchdown. As of late, Gordon was a healthy scratch in both of Kansas City’s postseason games.

According to Pelissero, the team hopes Gordon will clear waivers to bring him back onto the practice squad. Giving the impression that Reid’s staff believes he’ll return to form after an entire off-season.
