Chiefs acquire DB Lonnie Johnson via trade with Texans

Two days after hauling in a new rookie class from the draft this past weekend, general manager Brett Veach is still working on adding talent to the Chiefs’ 2022 roster. On Monday afternoon, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport tweeted the Chiefs have sent a conditional 2024 seventh-round draft choice to the Houston Texans for cornerback Lonnie Johnson.

The Chiefs eventually announced the move of their official Twitter account.

Johnson, 26, entered the league as a second-round draft by the Houston Texans in 2019. He accounted for three interceptions a year ago and had recorded 172 career tackles in three seasons. Johnson spent his rookie season playing as a cornerback for Houston before the team eventually converted him to safety.

During the 2022 NFL Draft, Houston selected cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. with the third overall pick and safety Jalen Pitre 37th overall. As a result, Johnson hinted at demanding to be traded on his official Twitter account on Monday.

He now joins former Texan teammate Justin Reid, who signed a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Chiefs in free agency, as part of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s defense.
