Breaking News: Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs agree to a 10-year contract extension

Incredible news for Chiefs fans as the young NFL star is going to be wearing the red and gold for a very long time. The Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes have agreed to a 10-year contract extension, league sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The extension will be added onto Mahomes’ existing contract which still had two years left prior to the new agreement, giving him a new 12-year contract that will keep the 24-year-old in Kansas City through the 2031 NFL season.

According to Schefter, Mahomes’ new contract will be worth “over $400 million in total” making him the richest player in league history.

Now that the ‘cat is out of the bag’, so to speak, it’ll be interesting to see what this will do to Kansas City’s salary cap and what the future will hold for other players such as Chris Jones, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce, who’ll be scheduled for a payday in the near future.

One thing’s for sure, the Chiefs have finally locked up their franchise quarterback for the next decade.

In just two seasons after being drafted 10th overall by Kansas City in 2017, Mahomes has thrown for 9,412 yards and 76 touchdowns to lead the Chiefs to two AFC Championship appearances and a Super Bowl victory.

Mahomes also won the 2018 MVP award, Super Bowl 54 MVP, is a First Team All-Pro and has been to the Pro Bowl twice. He threw for 50 touchdowns in his first season as a starter and is the first QB to lead three 10-point comebacks in one postseason.

Again, he’s only 24 and with a resume, that impressive and his best football yet to be played, Chiefs fans are about to see the best era of Kansas City football over the following 12 seasons.
