Andy Reid was confident in Mahomes’ late-game heroics during latest comeback drive

The Kansas City Chiefs avenged their only loss of the season on Sunday night, defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 35-31 and improving to 9-1 on the year.

Vegas has shown they are the only team in the league that can go toe-to-toe with the best offense in the NFL right now. The Raiders put up 364 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, giving Kansas City a run for their money.

However, the Silver and Black were no match for the heroics of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who led one of the best fourth-quarter comeback drives of the 2020 season.

Down 31-28 with 1:43 left in the fourth quarter, Mahomes led a magical seven-play, 75-yard drive for the go-ahead touchdown to win the game in the closing seconds.

The Chiefs offense began their comeback drive on their own 25-yard line. The first play was a 10-yard reception by wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the 35-yard line. Mahomes would find Hill again for a 9-yard completion on second-down, to the 44.

Hill had a big night against the Raiders, finishing with 11 catches for 102 yards a TD.

On third and one, from their own 44-yard line, Mahomes fired a pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman for a 16-yard completion to bring the Chiefs over to the Vegas side of the field.

From the Raiders’ 40-yard line, Mahomes found tight end Travis Kelce in the middle of the field for another 15-yard gain and a new set of downs. On the next play, Mahomes went to the flat and flicked a pass to running back Darrel Williams for a three-yard completion to the 22-yard line.

On the final play of the drive, Mahomes threw a 22-yard strike to Travis Kelce, who was wide open in the end zone, for the go-ahead game-winner.

Kelce finished with another huge performance, reeling in 8 catches for 127 yards and a touchdown. While, Patrick Mahomes completed 34 of 45 for 348 yards, two TDs, and his second interception of the season.

During his post-game conference, Head Coach Andy Reid was asked if he ever considered going for a field goal instead of the game-winning touchdown.

“I’ve got Pat Mahomes, so you give me a minute and a half, and I’m good there,” he said.

Reid is truly confident in his quarterback, and why shouldn’t he be? The latest comeback drive by Kansas City’s offense has shown the rest of the league just how lethal they can be when they need to put points on the board quickly. It also makes Patrick Mahomes the true front-runner in the MVP race, putting him ahead of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

So far, the Raiders are the only team that is built to beat Kansas City, and they still came up short in the final seconds. If the playoffs were to begin today, these two rivals would be meeting in the postseason for the first time since 1991.

This week, the Chiefs will prepare for their Week 12 matchup with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
