Andy Reid gives injury update on Hollywood Brown

The Kansas City Chiefs first-team offense took a hit on the first play of their preseason loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday evening. Veteran wide receiver and splash offseason addition Marquise “Hollywood” Brown caught the first Patrick Mahomes pass of the year and was immediately driven into the ground, injuring his shoulder. He did not return to the field at EverBank Stadium.

After the game, head coach Andy Reid took to the podium and gave an update to Brown’s injury status, mentioning the injury is what former Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill suffered in 2019 (also against Jacksonville).

“As far as the injuries go, Hollywood Brown has that same thing that Tyreek had down here, actually,” Reid said. “Sternoclavicular post dislocation; They’ve taken him to the hospital. They’ll check him out, and they’re working on that as we speak.”

Right now, there’s no timetable for how long the Chiefs will be without their new star receiver. All that’s known for the time being is he’ll be out for some time.

“I think he’ll miss some time,” Reid said. “We’ll just see where it’s at. We’re kind of going through it right now. We’ll know more later on here.”

Hill missed four weeks when he injured his shoulder five years ago, which could indicate how long Brown will be out.

During Hill’s injury recovery during the ‘19 season, Chiefs training Rick Burkholder explained what a sternoclavicular joint injury is and what the team’s trainers and medical were doing to treat it.

“[Hill] had a sternoclavicular joint injury, which is where your clavicle comes into your sternum,” Burkholder explained. “Those can be injured coming out the front, up top, or in the back. If it goes posteriorly or back, it becomes a medical issue for us so that we worry that there’s more problems. His came back posteriorly, and he didn’t have any medical issues but we still transported him to Baptist Medical Center [Jacksonville] and we turned his care over to Brett Frykberg, who is an ortho-trauma physician.”

The Chiefs will give more updates once they get back to St. Joseph. Until then, the team has their fingers crossed that the injury won’t be season-ending and Brown will be back in time for the regular season.
