All-Time Jersey Countdown to Chiefs Season Opener: #95 Chris Jones

Moving along in our all-time jersey number countdown until the Chiefs’ season-opening rematch with the Houston Texans on September 10, we move down to number 95 and look at the first current Chief that makes the list, a defensive tackle who’s currently one of the best in the business right now and in a bit of a contract dispute with the team.

With 95 days until the start of the 2020 NFL season, we look back at the career of Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, who played 4 seasons in the National Football League thus far, all in Kansas City since he was drafted in 2016.

Chris Jones 2016 – Pres

Drafted 37th overall in 2016, Chris Jones turned into the monster defensive tackle the Chiefs were looking for. At 6-foot-6-inches, 310-pounds, the former Mississippi State Bulldog used his size and strength to push himself to the top as one of the elite defensive linemen in the National Football League.

In his rookie season, Jones finished with 28 tackles (17 solo), 2 sacks, 11 assists, 5 tackles for loss, 10 QB hits.

In 2017, his sophomore season, Jones surmounted himself as the defensive threat that terrorized opposing offenses with 32 tackles (22 solo), 10 assists, 5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and 13 QB hits. He also got an interception, seven pass deflections, and 4 forced tackles.

As the Chiefs advanced to the AFC Championship game in 2018, Jones hit career highs with 40 tackles (35 solo), 5 assists, 19 tackles for loss, 15.5 sacks, 29 QB hits, two forced fumbles, and an interception he took for a 20-yard touchdown.

Jones began to hold out in hopes of a new contract extension and refused to attend any team organized workouts or mini-camps with no avail. Many were expecting him to ride his holdout into training camp. Instead, Jones showed up when camp began and played the final year of his contract through the 2019 season.

During the 2019 campaign, Jones helped lead the Chiefs to their Super Bowl 54 victory by accounting for 36 tackles (23 solo), 13 assists, 8 tackles for a loss, 20 QB hits, and 9 sacks.

Going into his fifth NFL season, Jones is holding out once more hoping for a new contract extension from Kansas City. Whether or not he finally gets his deserved contract or will be forced to play under the franchise tag he was given earlier this off-season remains to be seen.
