Chiefs vs. Ravens: HC Andy Reid gives injury update on WR “Hollywood” Brown

The Kansas City Chiefs have been without their top wide receiver “Hollywood” Brown since the start of the preseason when he went down with a sternoclavicular joint injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 10. Brown suffered the injury on the very first play of the game after catching an 11-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes before being driven into the ground by a Jags defender.

Brown was immediately taken to a local Jacksonville hospital after the game, where X-rays were taken and the injury was confirmed. The veteran missed the remainder of training camp and preseason. The Chiefs’ medical staff estimated it’ll take roughly four to six weeks for Brown to recover. That slates the playmaker’s return for the third or fourth game of the season.

On Friday during a virtual presser via Zoom, head coach Andy Reid confirmed the Chiefs will not have Brown in the lineup when they kick off the NFL season from GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5.

“I don’t think you’ll have Hollywood this week,” said Reid. “Hollywood won’t be back this week, and we’ll just see how it goes, but the kid’s amazing. His progress has been incredible, but I wouldn’t predict him being there this week.”

Brown is just the third player to suffer a sternoclavicular joint injury since 2012. Tyreek Hill suffered the injury when he was a member of the Chiefs in 2019 (also against the Jaguars) and Danny Amendola suffered the injury when he was a member of the St. Louis Rams in 2012.

While Brown remains on the sideline, the Chiefs will have to rely on the core of other receivers to help move the ball of offense.
