Kansas City Chiefs sign QB Bailey Zappe to practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs added a new quarterback to lead their scout team in 2024.

Every few years, the Chiefs change out their practice squad signal caller and just like Chase Litton and Shane Buechele before him, Chris Oladokun will not be back with Kansas City after two seasons with the team.

While the team was signing players to fill their 16-man practice squad, the Chiefs coaching staff opted to bring in a QB who has experience playing real NFL reps during the regular season and picked up former New England Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Zappe, 25, began his NFL career as a fourth-round selection by the New England Patriots in the 2022 NFL Draft. Zappe was part of the Pats’ ongoing search for Tom Brady’s replacement.

Through two seasons in Foxboro, Zappe appeared in 14 total games and is 4-4  as a starter, while completing 63.2% of his throws for 2,053 yards and 11 touchdowns to 12 interceptions.

The addition of Zappe gives the Chiefs extra depth after waiving Chris Oladokun and Ian Book on Tuesday for their less-than-stellar preseason performances. Now, Kansas City has some added insurance to their QB room under Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz.

It’s unlikely Zappe will see the field this year, but he’ll still prove to be a valuable asset to the team as he takes his experience to the practice field.
