8-21-2021: Chiefs Injury Updates

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a few minor injuries during their exhibition matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on Friday evening.

Most significantly, wide receiver Tyreek Hill did not play Friday due to a flared-up hamstring, however, he was with the team during pregame warmups.

“Tyreek had a hamstring that kind of tightened up on him in practice,” Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid told reporters Friday. “Thought he could go, and then during warmups, it tightened up again, so I chose to keep him out of there.”

Cornerback Rashad Fenton also had complications with his hamstring while fielding punts during pregame warmups as well.

“Before the game, [Rashad] Fenton tweaked his hamstring,” said Reid. “Looks like it’s a knot, but we’ll see [Saturday] when we get back.”

On Saturday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports three more players on Kansas City’s roster were sidelined with an injury, the first being running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

“Clyde hurt his right ankle early,” Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid told reporters Friday. “He’s got a slight sprain on the inside of his ankle. They’re gonna check it tomorrow. [But] it doesn’t look like a high-ankle sprain so that’s always a good thing, but they’ll double-check it.”

Before being injured, Edwards-Helaire ran for 13 yards on three carries and caught one pass for a 10-yard gain in the Chiefs preseason victory over Arizona. Pelissero reports CEH is getting his ankle examined Saturday, however, the Chiefs don’t appear to be overly concerned about any potential long-term issues to their starting running back.

Kansas City may be without another one of their backfield rushers. Second-string running back Darrel Williams was evaluated for a concussion upon his early exit during Friday’s game.

Kansas City will also be without a member of their offensive line. Backup center Austin Blythe reportedly underwent hernia surgery recently and will be out for approximately three weeks. However, Pelissero reports the Chiefs do expect Blythe back in time for their home opener against the Cleveland Browns.
