2024 Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp Recap: Day 2

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up Day 2 of training camp at Missouri Western State University at St. Joe on Monday. The team began a session of light practices with just the quarterbacks and rookies last week. The rest of the team reported for the official start of training camp on Sunday.

Monday was the second full practice for the Chiefs’ 2024 training camp. It was also the second of 19 practices that are open to the fans.

Notable players not in attendance include defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (triceps), defensive end Charles Omenihu (ACL), left guard Joe Thuney (pec), and cornerback Jaylen Watson (labrum), who are starting camp on PUP (physically unable to perform). Meanwhile, safety Justin Reid and defensive lineman B.J. Thompson are listed on the Non-Football Injury list.

Most recent absences to report include rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who wasn’t spotted at practice but the team later confirmed it was only an illness, per report from Pete Sweeney. Cornerback Kelvin Joseph wasn’t at practice either but the team said it was an excused absence.

Highlights from Monday include plenty of big plays by the defense. Second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice caught two passes that both ended in fumbles during 7-on-7 drills. Linebacker Drue Tranquill and cornerback Trent McDuffie were credited with the takeaways.

Linebacker Nick Bolton emphasized to his teammates about attacking the football and punching the ball out.

Tranquill broke up a Mahomes pass that was intended for Kadarius Toney and CB Nazeeh Johnson deflected a pass thrown by Carson Wentz. Safety Jayden Hicks got in between a Mahomes pass during practice drills in the red zone. However, the Super Bowl MVP finished with a red zone touchdown pass to Hollywood Brown.

During 11-on-11 drills, Mahomes attempted deep attempts to Brown and Mecole Hardman, but McDuffie broke up that pass targeting Hardman. 11-on-11 drills wrapped up with cornerback Joshua Williams intercepting Mahomes and cornerback D.J. Miller picking off Wentz.

The Chiefs will resume Day 3 of Training Camp on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m.
